What causes smells?
Any substance with a vapour pressure has the potential of emitting odours. The human nose can detect about 5,000 smells. Certain odours do not register at all with some people — for example, only 65% can detect the principal odour in human sweat. The ability to smell is also a sense that rapidly becomes fatigued. A person working in a place contaminated with a malodour will become totally oblivious to it, yet it could be highly offensive to someone entering the area — which explains the common attitude of "My dog doesn't smell. I don't know what you're talking about!"
The detection of an odour depends on the type and concentration of the odorous molecules, the sensitivity of the individual's nose, and also the odour's culturally conditioned interpretation. If a smell is always present, people may simply stop noticing it.
How can I stop my feet from smelling?
Most families have someone who suffers from smelly feet and shoes. Typically younger members of the family are affected. These unpleasant odours are associated with higher than normal population densities of bacteria and their resulting exoenzyme generation. Bacteria, yeasts and fungi thrive in the warm, moist environment inside shoes, particularly athletic shoes. Sweat and skin particles provide bacterial hosts and their decay adds to the problem.
Foot and shoe odour can be controlled with simple measures: wash feet regularly with an antibacterial soap if possible and dry thoroughly; change socks frequently; wear shoes that breathe and allow them to air in the sun where possible; go barefoot or wear sandals where possible. You can read more tips and tricks on our blog here. We also recommend Odorex® Foot And Shoe Deodoriser.
How can I control pet odours?
The best way to control odour is at its source before it becomes airborne. Odorex® products do not use problematic enzymes, bacteria, oxidizers or olfactory desensitizers. They work by combining counteraction, bonding (chemisorption) and absorption — technology that permanently eliminates odours on contact.
Common approaches like masking (adding a stronger scent) or enzyme-based products can be unreliable. Enzyme products in particular are not compatible with detergents or germicides, so their effectiveness is greatly reduced if there is any residue from earlier cleaning. Odorex® avoids these limitations entirely. Read more tips and tricks in our blog here.
Which product is best for cat pee?
We have three products that will eliminate cat pee odour: Odorex Cat Odour Eliminator (COE), Odorex Animal Odour Eliminator (AOE), and Odorex Pet Cleanup Concentrate (PCC).
It depends on where and the size of the job. We would always recommend COE first as it is specifically formulated to remove the smell of cat pee. It comes in a pour bottle — as most cats pee on porous surfaces like carpet, a pour bottle allows you to soak the area to reach the pee rather than give the surface a superficial spray.
If the cat has peed on a vertical surface or somewhere hard to reach, you can transfer COE into a clean spray bottle, or our AOE spray might be easier to use. If you repeatedly need to clean up accidents or have a large area to deodorise, PCC is the most economical choice — 1L makes 25L of cleaning solution.
As all our products work on contact with the source of the odour, you need to ensure you soak the area so the solution can reach the source.
If you can't find the source of the odour we recommend using our Pet Urine Stain Detector.
What can I use to eliminate animal odour outside?
Odorex Pet Cleanup Concentrate (PCC) is the best product for eliminating animal odour like cat and dog pee outside. It's what our boarding kennel, doggy daycare and cattery customers use for their facilities. It will eliminate pet odour from concrete, decking and artificial grass — 1L makes 25L of cleaning and deodorising solution. Also available in 5L, and it can be used inside too.
Can Odorex Shampoo be used on cats?
Yes! If you're brave enough to wash a cat, Odorex Deodorising Pet Shampoo and Odorex Professional Pet Shampoo Concentrate are both safe to use on cats. Odorex Shampoo has a pH of 6.5, which is ideal for dogs. Cats have a pH slightly closer to humans, which means they can safely use a dog shampoo with a pH like Odorex. By comparison, human shampoo should not be used on dogs as it's too acidic and will strip their natural oils.
How can I eliminate the smell of tomcat spray?
Tomcat spray is a serious problem because it contains odorous materials in addition to urine. If it's visible, wash off the sprayed surface first — but this won't take care of spray that has penetrated the surface. The only effective approach is to spray the area with a quality odour remover several times until the odour is controlled or eliminated.
We recommend Odorex® Animal Odour Eliminator on hard or vertical surfaces. On porous surfaces such as carpet, use Odorex® Cat Odour Eliminator: place a clean cloth over the affected area and stomp it to force the fluid down into the fibres. Allow to dry, or mop up excess fluid with a dry cloth and repeat the process.
What can I use on cat urine in my carpets?
Cat urine in carpets is a significant problem — it usually goes undetected for a long time and the cat can keep soiling the same area. The urine itself has very little odour but once it starts to decay it becomes a serious problem. The first stage produces ammonia; the second stage produces mercaptans, which are the real issue. With carpets, the urine almost always soaks through into the floor beneath.
The only solution is to thoroughly soak the soiled area with a quality odour eliminator. We recommend Odorex® Cat Odour Eliminator — pour it onto the problem area making certain you have covered it completely with enough volume to soak through the carpet and into the floor beneath. It also effectively removes fresh animal stains from most flooring materials, and works even where enzyme-based products have failed.
How can I stop my dog smelling so bad?
All dogs have some level of natural body odour, which usually grows stronger with age. Medical problems such as skin conditions or ear infections may also cause odour — these should be referred to a veterinarian. Dogs are also prone to rolling in foul-smelling material, much to their owners' discomfort.
Bathing with Odorex® Deodorising Pet Shampoo will solve most smelly problems. However, shampooing too frequently can cause skin dryness and irritation — use Odorex® Dog Deodoriser between washes (simply spray it on, ruffling the fur to reach skin and coat) and you can also use this on furnishings and dog bedding. For extra smelly bedding, add Odorex Pet Cleanup Concentrate to the rinse cycle.
Can I use your products outside in the kennel?
Yes — Odorex® Pet Cleanup Concentrate is ideal for large establishments such as boarding kennels and catteries. It contains powerful odour neutralising agents plus surfactants for cleaning and an anti-bacterial agent to disinfect and kill odour-causing bacteria. It has been carefully formulated to ensure it does not cause any allergic or irritant reactions. Available in 1L and 5L. Recommended dilution: one part PCC to 25 parts clean water.
Does A.O.E work on dog and cat faeces odours?
Animal faecal matter gives off many unpleasant odours including indoles and skatoles. Most of these can be eliminated by removing the matter and properly disposing of it. For any remaining odours, spray the contaminated surface with Odorex® Animal Odour Eliminator.
My dog rubs his bottom on the carpet — what can I do?
The liquid in anal sacs has a particularly obnoxious odour. Some animals empty their anal sacs when frightened but most often if your dog is 'scooting' on the floor, their anal glands are probably full - if the problem persists we recommend speaking to your vet.
To remove the odour at home, first wipe up all visible liquid with a disposable rag. Then use Odorex® Animal Odour Eliminator — saturate spray all areas that the anal sac liquid came in contact with and allow to dry.
Do you have a product for smelly cat litter boxes?
The basic method for controlling odour in cat litter boxes is to remove solid matter frequently and change the litter often so ammonia from decaying urine does not become a problem. Odorex® Animal Odour Eliminator AOE can be sprayed on pet litter with very good results — it will control the odour and extend the life of the litter.
Do you have a product for ferret body odour?
Most pet ferrets have had their anal sacs removed, which is the main source of their odour. However, other causes of odour vary widely between animals. Odorex® Deodorising Pet Shampoo and Odorex® Dog Deodoriser are both effective for ferret odours. Between baths, simply spray Odorex® Dog Deodoriser directly on the ferret — ruffle their coat while spraying so the product covers as much hair and skin as possible. It's also ideal for treating car seats, carpets and bedding.
